The Defiant Ones: Jimmy Iovine & Dr. Dre…

A new docu-series called, The Defiant Ones, about the relationship between musical ICONS, Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre is about to hit your favorite premium channel, HBO.

According to HBO,

The Defiant Ones is a four-part documentary series that tells the stories of Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre — one the son of a Brooklyn longshoreman, the other straight out of Compton — their improbable partnership and surprising leading roles in a series of transformative events in contemporary culture.

The docu-series will feature interviews from some of the most notable iconic names in music Snoop Dogg, Nas, Gwen Stefani, Ice Cube, Eminem, Bono, and many others. This should be a highly inspiring and informational four-part series for anyone needing a moral booster, or just a good ol’ kick in the ass for making their dreams come true.

I will be sure to tune in.

The Defiant Ones premieres on July 9th at 9pm on HBO.

DETROIT…

I often find myself sifting through the pages of the Internet trying to see what’s popping in the land of entertainment. Occasionally, I find gems. I had no idea this movie was thing and happening.

The movie Detroit is period drama based on the 1967 Detroit Riots. According to BlackPast.org:

The Detroit Race Riot in Detroit, Michigan in the summer of 1967 was one of the most violent urban revolts in the 20th century.  It came as an immediate response to police brutality but underlying conditions including segregated housing and schools and rising black unemployment helped drive the anger of the rioters. On Sunday evening, July 23, the Detroit Police Vice Squad officers raided an after hours “blind pig,” an unlicensed bar on the corner of 12th Street and Clairmount Avenue in the center of the city’s oldest and poorest black neighborhood.  A party at the bar was in progress to celebrate the return of two black servicemen from Vietnam.  Although officers had expected a few patrons would be inside they found and arrested all 82 people attending the party.  As they were being transported from the scene by police, a crowd of about 200 people gathered outside agitated by rumors that police used excessive force during the 12th Street bar raid.  Shortly after 5:00 a.m., an empty bottle was thrown into the rear window of a police car, and then a waste basket was thrown through a storefront window.

Detroit features a few notable faces such as John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Jason Mitchell (Straight Out of Compton), Algee Smith (The New Edition Story),  Jacob Lattimore (Black Nativity), and Anthony Mackie (Captain America).

Now, I would be remised if I didn’t include some of the criticisms that I’ve been reading about this movie regarding the erasure of black women from the trailer. If you noticed, out of all the names listed above not one of them was of a black actress. Ebony Magazine clocked the erasure and wrote an article about it that can be found, here.

Detroit hits theaters on August 4th. The trailer can be found below!

Documentaries that make you go hmmm: Mommy Dead & Dearest…

If you love murder mystery documentaries as much as I do then I have a treat for you!

HBO Documentaries are always gritty, crazy, graphic, and uncensored. Exactly how I like it. So imagine my intrigue when I saw the trailer for “Mommy Dead & Dearest”. I immediately watched the trailer and grabbed my remote so that I could record it to my DVR when it dawned on me. Girl, you don’t have no damn HBO. Shit. My plan has been foiled. I immediately started to think to myself, who do I need to sweet talk in order to access some HBO?

Luckily, God shown his mercy upon me, the YouTube Gods shined down, and up pops the full documentary via YouTube for my viewing pleasure.

Synopsis via HBO:

Things are not always as they appear, especially in the case of Dee Dee and Gypsy Rose Blanchard. Child Abuse, mental illness, and forbidden love converge in this mystery involving a mother and daughter who were thought to be living a fairy tale life that turned out to be a living nightmare.

What starts out as a grisly tale of matricide morphs into a rabbit hole of deception and unrelenting abuse, journeying towards the truth about what happened that night. Featuring exclusive access to Gypsy from prison and a trove of police interrogation tapes, medical records, and secret conversations, this HBO Documentary Film is a disturbing, first-hand look at a life arrested and the consequences of trying to keep someone young forever.

It’s crazy. If you have HBO on any platform it’s available for your viewing pleasure. If you’re like me and refuse to pay…YouTube is your friend. The documentary is on YouTube for as long as it takes them to realize it’s up there, and snatch it down for copyright infringement. I advise you to watch it now!

*Update: Well, they snatched it down. That only took a few hours lol

Another day another sh*t show…

In more stuff you care about news, the editors over at #Newsweek greenlit a brave new article discussing the epiphany that lonely, haggard, and desperate black women are having as it pertains to dating outside of their race. For those of you that are new here that was me being sarcastic.

Newsweek must’ve sensed the sh*t storm that Black Twitter was brewing, because they’ve since deleted the article as well as the tweet referencing the article. The deletions didn’t stop the beautiful Black Queens of Black Twitter from letting them have it though.

Little girl, Mr. Seal is not a friend…

Have we learned nothing from JAWS, any of them? What on earth possessed that little girl to lean her happy ass over that pier to pet that Seal is beyond me. I guess curiousity got the best of her. She learned a lesson that day.

Hell, if I do go to a beach the moment I see any kind of creature in the water…I’m out. Clean out. Move. I’ll be on the boardwalk with some french fries and a drink. Good day and good damn night.

I kept seeing the video on my timeline, but I would just scroll past it. Finally, the lord said, “Kirs, there’s a message here. Watch the video and let the people know.” So, I watched and was mortified.

How could the adults just let that little girl attempt to pet that wild animal all willy nilly like that? That Seal politely assessed the situation and kindly dragged her ass into the water. Thankfully her grandfather was there to grab her, because she could’ve drowned!

Now, what’s the lesson that the lord asked me to pass along? “Keep your hands, arms, feet, and legs inside the TRAM car at all times. Just admire the wildlife from afar. Leave it be.”

I have been wondering when there would be a Bad Boy Records documentary released. Well folks, it looks like it’s finally here!

The documentary debuted at the TriBeCa Film Festival in April, and it looks like it will hit Apple Music on June 25th.

I’m hoping it will end up on television at some point.

More lessons from famous married people going through divorce…

lesson

***The following is from the perspective of a woman. Yes, I know the Kendu Isaac’s of the world exist, but I’m not speaking about him today.***

If 2016-2017 has taught women nothing it has taught us that it is essential to have your own coin. I for one believe that if you are dating, married, and/or marrying someone famous and/or wealthy and you don’t leave the relationship/marriage better off than what you came in…you’re hustling backwards.

How many stories have we read where a woman has literally put her all into a marriage and/or relationship with a famous /wealthy man all for him to leave the woman begging for wooden nickels on the side of the road?

Let’s use the public divorce battle between Mike Epps and his wife Mechelle as an example. It is being reported that they were married for 10 years and Mechelle says that she has never held a normal job and has no skill set at this point to obtain one. She says that she was asked by Mike to be a stay at home mother and hold down the fort as he provided for the family. Now, although I think Mechelle allegedly asking Mike to pay spousal support of damn near $120K a month is a bit excessive. I do believe there are lessons to be learned. Reports say that Mike allegedly owes the tax man over $2 million. As a result, Mechelle alleges that he has cut her off financially as a means of forcing her to settle. Hardball.

The lesson here: Always secure your own bag. If you have to downsize do so and learn a skill. What do the old folks say? It’s never too late.

Black people get Acupuncture too…

Frankly, I had never ever really seen a black person get Acupuncture or even talk about possibly getting Acupuncture. I would see movies and/or pictures of the process and just always found it to be intriguing. It was not until I began struggling with Anxiety issues at the beginning of the year that I began to ponder, what if? I had always heard that many people, usually white people in the United States anyway, found it be helpful in treating Depression and Anxiety.

According to WebMD:

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that has been practiced for centuries. It’s based on the theory that energy, called chi (say “chee”), flows through and around your body along pathways called meridians.

Acupuncturists believe that illness occurs when something blocks or unbalances your chi. Acupuncture is a way to unblock or influence chi and help it flow back into balance.

Acupuncture is done by putting very thin needles into your skin at certain points on your body. This is done to influence the energy flow. Sometimes heat, pressure, or mild electrical current is used along with needles.

So, when I began struggling with my own Anxiety and inflammation issues I thought that it couldn’t hurt. As of today, I’ve only had two sessions. I was extremely nervous during my first session, because I had nothing to compare it to. I didn’t know if it would hurt or what the sensation would be. I knew no one who could give me a heads up about anything, and all I had to go on were internet reviews.

The Low Down: If anyone tells you that it doesn’t hurt. They are lying. In the thinner skinned sections of the body like your feet, wrists, ears, arms, and etc you definitely feel the pin pricks. It is not unbearable, but you may say “ouch” out loud or flinch. Overall, after only two sessions, I can say that I see slight differences in mood and the issues that I was having with inflammation in my lower extremities. I might also add that I do see a Therapist on a regular basis as well as my Primary Care Physician. I use all the resources available to me. I encourage everyone to do the same.

Pricing: I go to an Eastern Medicine facility and without insurance a session is about $125. They do private and community sessions where there are other people in the room receiving Acupuncture as well. I think what most people will find surprising is that Acupuncture is often covered by insurance. I pay a $35 co pay for my sessions and will begin going regularly every two weeks.

I am a strong advocate for people of color, especially black people, to seek out alternative forms of therapy for their health and mental ailments along with Western medicine if needed. There are so many resources available to us. I encourage exploration and research.

I just want to know what the check looks like…

Am I the only one sitting at home wondering how much your fave reality tv star is being paid to advertise these dang blasted push-up bras? Aside from the fact that they’re essentially made for women with smaller breasts, because lets face it if your boobs are bigger than a “B” cup, with no breast enhancement, those bad boys are sagging like an orange in a knee high. So, where exactly are you going with it on?

The check must be nice, because folks are getting half naked on the gram to advertise like the bra has some medicinal purpose. I just want this contraption and Flat Tummy Tea to go away.

Logic (@Logic301) aka The Hometown Kid aka the DMV Representer aka Gaithersburg, MD’s Very Own just dropped his highly anticipated new project, #Everybody. Logic is an extremely underrated artist in the mainstream Hip Hop community. He’s been quietly selling out arenas all over the country and his fan base is fanatical. Each project he releases is top notch from the lyrical content to the album packaging. Sam Spratt (@samspratt), the Illustrator for all of his projects, is a freakin’ BEAST. I cannot wait to give this new album a listen! The album is available EVERYWHERE.
